Background of the study
This study examines how religious narratives influence Igbo language practices in Enugu. Religious narratives—ranging from biblical stories to indigenous spiritual lore—play a significant role in shaping the linguistic behavior of communities by reinforcing values, idioms, and modes of expression. In Enugu, where religion is interwoven with everyday life, these narratives are disseminated through sermons, community gatherings, and religious media, influencing vocabulary, syntax, and speech registers among Igbo speakers (Okafor, 2023). The research explores how religious texts and oral traditions contribute to language maintenance and change, including the incorporation of archaic expressions and proverbs into daily communication. The study employs qualitative methods, such as participant observation at religious events and in-depth interviews with religious leaders and community members. It further analyzes printed and digital religious materials to determine their impact on standard and colloquial language forms. By investigating the interplay between religious discourse and language practices, the study aims to highlight the mechanisms through which cultural and religious values are embedded in the Igbo language, thereby influencing identity and social cohesion. The findings are expected to contribute to the broader field of sociolinguistics by demonstrating how religion functions as both a conservator and innovator of language practices in urban Igbo communities (Okafor, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the significant role of religious narratives in Igbo communities, there is limited research on their effect on language practices in Enugu. Many religious narratives, when disseminated through various media, have been observed to alter everyday language use, yet inconsistencies and shifts in usage remain poorly understood (Adebayo, 2024). The absence of systematic studies on how these narratives influence vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and speech registers leads to a gap in understanding the dynamics of language evolution in religious contexts. This study seeks to identify these influences and evaluate whether they contribute to language preservation or change.
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the influence of religious narratives on Igbo language usage.
To identify specific linguistic changes resulting from religious discourse.
To propose recommendations for language planning that consider religious influences.
Research questions:
How do religious narratives shape Igbo language practices in Enugu?
What specific linguistic features are affected by these narratives?
How can the influence of religious narratives be managed to support language preservation?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it reveals the role of religious narratives in shaping Igbo language practices, offering insights into the intersection of religion and linguistics. The findings will inform language planners, educators, and cultural institutions on how religious discourse contributes to both language preservation and change, fostering better communication strategies in religious and educational settings (Okafor, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the effect of religious narratives on Igbo language practices in Enugu; does not extend to other regions or languages.
Definitions of terms:
Religious narratives: Stories and texts with spiritual significance.
Language practices: Patterns and behaviors in language use.
Sociolinguistics: The study of language in its social context.
